The Chevrolet Steering Knuckle is what connects the suspension to steering ensuring that the wheels are in line and react under load. Chevrolet has established a reputation based on cars that feel like friends, look cool and pull hard. Chevy does not distribute daily commuting differently to cross country travels and requires smooth power and smooth cabins. The badge continues to pursue smarter movement from the original 1911 runabout up to the current electric crossovers. Chevy equips cabins with hands-free Super Cruise, fast infotainment menus, and buttons you do not need to strain eyes to touch. Road trips are more comfortable to arrive at since gas rates remain candid and seats remain broad. Chevy also does not forget fun and throttle response is eager even in the grocery-getter. Drivers choose the brand when they are seeking utility that does not maul their wallets. Minimal maintenance schedules imply that weekends remain free of roads and not ramps. The modern Steering Knuckle has control arm mounts, a tie-rod eye and an internal spindle on the rear-drive design, or a bolt-on hub that allows a front or all-wheel drive axle to slide through, thus the wheel lifts over the bumps, but still swings smoothly as you turn the steering wheel. The old kingpin was substituted with forged steel and ball joints, which increased the strength of the Steering Knuckle without increasing its weight. That upgrade soaks up potholes and maintains camber constant which protects tire life and steering feel. The 4WD, FWD, AWD, and RWD layouts are all supported since the component does not obstruct its mounting geometries. The tighter turning response is felt by Chevrolet drivers as they tap the wheel.

Chevrolet Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear Steering Knuckle on Chevrolet Corvette?
    A:
The driveaxle can be removed by blocking the front wheels so that they do not move while the wheel lugs are loosened, the car is raised in the rear and properly supported on jackstands and the wheels are removed. On models built after 2012, the driveaxle/hub nut can be unstaked with help of a punch or a small chisel; air tools should not be used to remove or install the nut. For those vehicles which do not come with the ceramic rotors, fix a punch or a drift on the brake rotor vanes, rotate the wheel till it comes in contact with the caliper bracket and apply the parking brace to keep the wheel immovable in order to loosen the nut.Apply the parking brake and have some one step on the brake pedal forcefully while removing the nut on the ceramic rotors. Loosen and remove the driveaxle / hub nut and throw it away, you will need to get a new one in order before releasing the parking brake. To uncouple the driveaxle from the hub splines, that end should be gently struck with a soft-faced hammer if it remains rigid a puller might be required. Remove the nut and washer from the top of the ABS wheel speed sensor and took the battery cable off of the electrical connector, also remove the bolt and the cable from the electronic suspension control sensor link, remove the tie-rod from the knuckle as well as the parking brake cable from both the knuckle and lever. Disconnect the brake hose and suspend the caliper aside; slacken the upper ball joint nut and use a ball stud remover to detach the ball stud from the upper control arm; likewise, for the lower ball joint nut and the knuckle. Take out the knuckle from the suspension arms but keep the driveaxle at a level that will not affect the inner CV joint. For installation, it is recommended to pick the knuckle to the required position, reconnect the suspension arms and bolts. Then, using a floor jack put under the lower control arm, lift the suspension system to a normal riding level and tighten the bolts to the standard recommended torque. Fit on the brake disc to the hub, fix the disc-locating fastener securely and fit on the caliper as well. Screw the driveaxle/hub nut and torque it to the specified value and the nut collar must be staked into the groove in the driveaxle for 2012 models and onwards. Finally, put the wheel and lugs bolts and lower the car, finally tighten the lugs bolts in the recommended torque then test the wheels alignment and if out of the standard test then adjust.
  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the rear Steering Knuckle on Chevrolet Camaro?
    A:
Remove the hub and bearing assembly, then take out the parking brake shoes and disconnect the parking brake cable from the knuckle. Separate the upper control arm and detach the toe-link arm from the knuckle. Remove the lower control arm to knuckle bolt/nut and the trailing arm to knuckle bolt/nut. Take the knuckle off the suspension arms, supporting the end of the drive axle with a piece of wire to avoid straining the inner CV joint. For installation, guide the knuckle into position, reconnect the suspension arms, and install the bolts. Use a floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension to normal ride height, then tighten the suspension fasteners to the specified torque values. Install the brake backing plate and parking brake shoes, reconnecting the parking brake cable. Next, install the hub and bearing assembly, place the brake disc on the hub, install the disc-locating fastener, and attach the caliper. Install the drive axle/hub nut and tighten it to the specified torque. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque, then have the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
