The Steering Knuckle of Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles is a control assembly that establishes the link between the suspension and steering systems to the front wheels. It is the point where the control arms, tie-rod ends, and either the spindles or the hubs will be located. The Knuckle enables the car to move vertically in relation to the roughness or bumps in the road and move horizontally according to the operator's maneuver. In relation to the drivetrain, a rear wheel drive Knuckle will comprise of an integral spindle or a hub with the tapered roller bearing whereas a front wheel drive, all wheel or four wheel drive vehicle's Knuckle will allow for a hub to be connected to the Knuckle. Discussed below is the progression of the steering knuckles from the kingpins to the ball joints as primary indicators of wheel stability and control in automotive systems. From the analysis of the different parts of the Knuckle, it can be deduced that thorough inspection and maintenance of the Knuckle will be very useful in the enhanced functionality as well as safety.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on Chevrolet Trailblazer?
    A:
The first step in Steering Knuckle replacement includes tire removal followed by wheel center cap removal and then drive axle nut removal. The vehicle needs support while you elevate it before moving to remove tire and wheel installations, wheel hub units, and bearing assemblies. With the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J24319-B) disconnect the outer tie rod from its mounting on the Steering Knuckle after unscrewing its retaining nut. The brake hose bracket retaining bolts must be removed to free the brake hose bracket from the Steering Knuckle. Begin by unscrewing the pinch bolt at the Steering Knuckle attachment point of the upper Control Arm followed by detachment of the upper Control Arm from the knuckle portion. Extraction of the Steering Knuckle from the lower Control Arm requires removing its lower Ball Joint retaining nut and employing the Ball Joint remover (J43631). The last step is to take out the Steering Knuckle from your vehicle. Installation begins by fitting the Steering Knuckle onto the lower Control Arm but you must always adhere to the fastener notice in service precautions. Fasten the lower Ball Joint retaining nut to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs. Torque setting). The upper Control Arm should be joined to the Steering Knuckle with the addition of an upper Control Arm pinch bolt and nut before tightening this joint to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). The brake hose bracket mounts onto the Steering Knuckle before securing it with retaining bolts tightened to 10 nm (7 ft. Lbs.). After installing the outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle, fasten a new outer tie rod retaining nut and set its torque to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). The Wheel Hub and bearing assembly goes back onto the vehicle along with the tire and wheel assembly before the vehicle is lowered and the drive axle nut is installed and tightened to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). After installing the drive axle nut tighten it to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.) while performing front toe adjustments.
