On the Chevrolet Tracker the use of the steering Steering Knuckle is critical since it links the suspension to the steering and to the front wheels. This one supports the control arms, tie rod ends and the spindle or hub so that the wheels can move up and down with change in suspension but move left and right with change in direction input from the steering. Different Steering Knuckles have been used in the Chevrolet Tracker vehicles over the years depending on the drive type, that is rear-wheel drive (RWD) or front, all or four-wheel or four-wheel drive (FWD/AWD/4WD). Unique configurations are RWD models may contain an integrated spindle within the Steering Knuckle while the FWD, AWD or 4WD models may have a hub separate from the Steering Knuckle mechanism that gives space for the drive axle. The Steering Knuckle design guarantees stability and efficient control of the wheel rotation together with good handling. Chevrolet Tracker Steering Knuckle and all related components should be inspected periodically so as to ensure that the car is as powerful and safe as possible.

Chevrolet Tracker Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install the steering knuckle on Chevrolet Tracker?
    A:
In order to install the Steering Knuckle lubricate the wheel bearing with wheel bearing lubricant (GM PIN 1051344) and fill it in the inner seal lip and hollow completely over 60 percent. Second, install the drive shaft inner seal on the knuckle with a check on the contact with the stepped surface. Repeat the lubrication process for the outer seal lip and hollow before the insertion of the drive shaft outer seal. Fix the knuckle to the ball stud while holding the lower Control Arm with a jack. Install the 2 nuts and 2 bolts to the strut bracket, tightening them at the 95 nm (69 ft. Lbs.), then jack removal. Replace a new nut to the lower Control Arm ball stud and tighten it to 60 nm (43.5 ft.lbs.). Add a new Tie Rod nut to the connection between the Tie Rod and the knuckle, followed by a tightening of 43 nm (31.5 ft. Lbs.). Pre-apply a thin bead of general motors sealer (GM P/N 1052366) to the mating surface of the wheel Spindle, and to the mating surface of the wheel knuckle, then fill the recess in the wheel Spindle with 10 g (0.4 oz.) of wheel bearing lubricant (GM P/N 1051344). For the landing gear assembly, follow this solution: install the wheel Spindle to the knuckle and the brake shield to the Spindle and tighten it with four bolts to a torque of 50 nm (36.5 ft. Lbs.). Go ahead to install the Wheel Hub, the bearings, and the seals, and the brake rotor, as well as the tire and wheel assembly. Lastly, lower the vehicle and check the wheel alignment, adjusting if needed.
  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on Chevrolet Tracker?
    A:
In order to service and repair the Steering Knuckle, you need to lift and support the operation of the vehicle. Take off the tire and wheel assembly and subsequently the brake rotor. Then remove the hub with bearings and seals. Remove the Tie Rod nut and use the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) to pry air the Tie Rod apart from the knuckle. Remove the 4 bolts from the brake shield then take off the brake shield from Spindle. Go ahead and take off the Spindle with the drive shaft bearing from the knuckle, and then the nut from the Control Arm ball stud. One must support the lower Control Arm with a jack to avoid injures to oneself and parts, as the coil spring is under a lot of pressure. Take out the two nuts and the two bolts from the strut bracket then using the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) take off the knuckle from the ball stud. Lastly, take out the front drive shaft outer seal as well as the front drive shaft inner seal on the knuckle.
