To replace and remove the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable, turn off the sir system. With the vehicle wheels straight ahead, use vehicle's steering column anti-rotation pin (J42640), steering column lock, or strap to prevent its spinning which will prevent damage and possible sir system malfunction. Make sure that the
Steering Wheel does not open before disconnecting the steering column, intermediate shaft(s), and steering gear. After isolating these components, do not twist the Steering Wheel or shift the front tires and wheels in order to avoid the possibility of the sir coil assembly going off-center. Ensure the wheels are straight ahead and j 42640 is installed or the ignition switch is in the lock position. Pull the Steering Wheel off the shaft on vehicles with a tilt steering column, pull the tilt lever straight out, then take out the 2 torx(R) head screws holding the lower trim cover, and then the two torx(R) head screws on the upper trim cover. Pull off the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness as well as the retaining ring so as to remove off the sir coil from the
Steering Shaft. In case of replacing, throw away the old sir coil. For installation, make sure that the new sir coil assembly is centered, and never take out the centering tab before installation is over. If recycling the same coil, it must be centralized. Set the sir coil assembly parallel to the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide the sir coil onto the Steering Shaft assembly and the retaining ring firmly seated into the groove on the Steering Shaft assembly. The centering tab must be removed and thrown out from the new sir coil. Install the upper trim cover using 2 torx (r) head screws and tighten to 1.5-nm (13 lb in), and the lower trim cover with two torx (r)'s head screws and ensure the tab on the lower trim cover clicks into the upper trim cover before tightening the screws. When using a tilt column, position the tilt lever handle in the steering column and slide it till it locks into position. Finally, mount the Steering Wheel on the Steering Shaft and activate the sir system.
