2009 Chevrolet Impala Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2009 Chevrolet Impala?
A: The sir system requires disabling before starting air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable replacement. Steering column or intermediate shaft dismantling operations must begin after making sure the wheels point forward and Steering Column is locked in place to avoid sir coil damage. Follow these steps to remove the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft: first extract the tilt lever (if equipped) by pulling it straight out before unscrewing torx(R) head screws to discard the lower and upper trim covers. Separate the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column harness then remove the retaining ring and extract the sir coil piece from the Steering Shaft assembly. Toss out any broken sir coil when making an upgrade. After you finish installation keep the new sir coil assembly properly centered until every installation step completes. After properly aligning the sir coil assembly with the horn tower of the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide the coil onto the Steering Shaft assembly while firmly seating the retaining ring into its groove. Mount the trim covers first by using torx(R) head screws to fasten them and check that the tabs properly slide into place. Vehicles with tilt columns require drivers to align the tilt lever handle before locking its position. End the process by installing the Steering Wheel to the shaft and enabling sir functionality.
