2006 Chevrolet Impala Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2006 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Required steps for inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil replacement include disabling the sir system. The wheels must face forward position with either the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) installed or the ignition switch in lock position to preserve air bag clock spring safety. Start by removing the Steering Wheel from its shaft then pull the tilt lever straight if needed before proceeding to disassemble the lower trim cover through 2 torx(R) head screws then remove the upper trim using more 2 torx(R) head screws. To replace the air bag clock spring begin by removing the retaining ring then detaching the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness. The discontinued air bag clock spring requires disposal. In order to install the parts properly ensure the wheels face forward while using either the pin j 42640 in the anti rotation position or by locking the ignition switch. The new air bag clock spring assembly needs to be perfectly positioned into the center while it must line up with the horn tower from the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Push the air bag clock spring onto its position on the Steering Shaft assembly before using a tool to set the retaining ring into its proper groove. Coil up the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring before installing the upper trim cover through 2 torx(R) head screws. Tighten the screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Seating position the lower trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws while also ensuring the vertical tabs on both covers align correctly. Tighten each screw to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). You need to put the tilt lever handle through the steering column until it becomes locked then you can mount the Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft. Finally, enable the sir system.
