Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Overhaul the Front Brake Calipers (25/3500 Series) on Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
    A:
Handle compressed air with care while removing the front brake caliper because inserting fingers might lead to severe damage. Place a thin wooden block to protect the Piston before you take off the caliper for service. Brake-assisted air pressure enters the hose port to push out the Piston before you unmount the boot and seal. Take out each of the caliper bleed screw cap and bleed screw. Look for deep scratches or rust in the brake caliper bore and Piston seal groove. If these issues exist replace the brake caliper. Routine inspections should be done on the caliper bracket guide surfaces to detect wear and corrosion with full replacement required. Wipe away brake pad guiding residue from both the caliper and bracket before cleaning all other parts with denatured alcohol and drying them using filtered compressed air. Use compressed air to clean all inner areas of the caliper and its bleeder valve. Following installation you should fasten the brake caliper bleed screw to 12 nm torque then put the bleed screw cap back. Add brake fluid to new Piston seals and match all caliper bore seal grooves without distorting their position. Install the seals into these slots. Slide the brake fluid-lubricated Piston into its proper position with the boot folded towards the Piston bore. Push the Piston into the bore after you place the boot into its grooves on both Piston and brake caliper. Position the boot at the end of the Piston and lower it until it rests on the bottom of the caliper bore. Rinse both Piston seals and place them into the brake caliper before positioning the brake caliper into its housing.
  • Q: How to replace the front brake calipers on the 25/3500 Series on Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
    A:
Before replacing the front brake caliper of the 25/3500 series check the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir first. You need to drain the fluid when the reservoir shows a level higher than midway. After taking out the wheel and tire you must compress the brake caliper pistons with two c-clamps across the housing which pushes the pistons completely back into the caliper. Wipe the brake hose area clean before putting on a rubber plug to seal the exposed brake pipe. Take off the brake hose to caliper bolt and reject the 2 stuck brake hose copper gaskets before disconnecting the brake hose from the caliper. First disconnect the brake caliper bolts and watch for the pedal when removing rotors/calipers and drums to prevent brake damage. Connect the new caliper to its bracket and secure it through Brake Caliper Bolt tightening at 108 nm (80 ft. Lbs.). Place 2 new copper brake hose gaskets on the brake hose and caliper bolt before tightening the hose to caliper bolt to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Press brake fluid out of the hydraulic system then put back the wheel and tire while also adding enough brake fluid when needed.
