A left-hand drive vehicle requires several steps before beginning the Rack And Pinion replacement process. First turn the
Steering Wheel to achieve a straight wheel position and after engaging the
Ignition Lock Cylinder lock position remove the key. Put the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) through the
Steering Column access hole to secure the column against movement. Remove front wheels with their tires along with the left wheelhouse panel and front air deflector. Install drain pans beneath the vehicle where necessary. Before disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion stub shaft you must verify that wheels are straight and the Steering Column is locked to prevent damage. To start disconnect all lower intermediate
Steering Shaft bolt before removing the lower intermediate Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion and separating the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends from the
Steering Knuckles. Beginning with power steering inlet hose bracket bolt removal, proceed to disconnect inlet and outlet hoses from the Rack And Pinion. Connectors replace and seal up the left front
Brake Line away from the left front brake hose. When a vehicle has all-wheel drive (AWD), technicians should support the front differential housing before loosening the right engine mount nut and raising the front differential housing to clear the Rack And Pinion bolt. To remove the Rack And Pinion you need to first disconnect both Rack And Pinion bolts and the rearward left side lower control arm nut and bolt before pulling forward the Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening. Install the Rack And Pinion by inserting it through the left wheel opening followed by tightening the rearward left side lower control arm nut and bolt to 180 nm (133 lb ft). When the system has awd the front differential housing should be lowered so install the right engine mount nut to 80 nm (59 lb ft). Connect the left Brake Line to the left brake hose using a 27 nm torque setting then install the power steering hoses on the Rack And Pinion followed by torquing the inlet hose bracket bolt at 23 nm (17 lb ft). First connect the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles before connecting the lower intermediate Steering Shaft to the Rack And Pinion. Install the lower intermediate Steering Shaft bolt and tighten it to 50 nm (37 lb ft). Finish cleaning all power steering fluid remnants before installing the front air deflector and left side wheelhouse panel and front tire and wheel assemblies. After removing the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) you must fill the power steering system and bleed it before moving on to fill and bleed the hydraulic brake system and finalize the front toe adjustment.
