First, check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir, then, to change the rear brake caliper. If it is in the middle between the maximum-full point and minimum allowable level, none should be removed but if it is above lower it to the midway level. Lift up the vehicle to remove the tire and wheel assembly. Compress the brake caliper pistons with a large c-clamp over the top of the caliper housing to the back of the outboard pad, clamping until the pistons are fully compressed. Make good the brake hose end and at the exposed brake pipe fitting fit a rubber cap or plug so that the hose will not lose any fluid and be dirtied. Remove the brake hose to caliper bolt and throw out the 2 copper brake hose gaskets, possibly stuck to the caliper housing or hose end. Then, you have to remove the brake caliper guide pin bolts and unbolt the brake caliper from the car, whereby inspect the caliper assembly. In the case of installation of new
Brake Pads, make use of a c-clamp to compress the pistons to the bottom of the caliper bores, protecting them using the old Brake Pad, metal plate or a wooden block. Lift the internal edge of the caliper boots by each piston with a small flat bladed tool to release any then trapped air so that the boots are below the face of the pistons. Mount onto the mounting bracket and gently remove any original adhesive patch, followed by cleaning the bolt threads using brake parts cleaner then applying thread locker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the threads. Mount the brake caliper mounting bolts and tighten the brake caliper' guide pin bolts to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Unfit the brake hose fitting rubber cap/plug fitted on the hose, fitting two new copper brake hoses gaskets, and fitting a new brake hose on the caliper by tightening the brake hose to the fitting of the caliper bolt to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Drain the hydraulic brake system, put the tire and wheel assembly back, lower the vehicle, and top-up the master cylinder reservoir to the required level using clean brake fluid.
