The procedure for the 8.6 inch axle requires using both the Pinion Bearing remover (J 45871) near the Pinion Bearing and the split plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) directed upside down against j 45871 to expel the bearing from the pinion. The j 22912-01 allows users to press bearings off from the 9.5/9.5ld inch axles. Begin by removing the shim and carefully pull out the outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing through even hammer strikes with a brass drift. The flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) along with either the inner bearing race installer (J 7818) or j 8611-01 will be needed to install the outer Pinion Bearing cup on either the 9.5/9.5ld inch axle or the 8.6 inch axle. Use the Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 45900) or the pinion cup bearing installer (J 22306) to install both the inner Pinion Bearing cup. Place the determined selective shim thickness between the inner Pinion Bearing and the gear shoulder. Drive both types of inner pinion bearings into their mounting positions using the pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433) for 8.6 inch axles or the inner Pinion Bearing installer (J 36614) until the cone fully touches the pinion shim. Place a fresh collapsible spacer and properly lubricate pinion bearings through application of axle-specific lubricating fluid. The installer (J 22388) enables users to install the axle housing Pinion Bearing with new pinion oil seals for both sizes. Install the pinion inside the axle housing and use gm p/n 12346004 or canadian p/n 10953480 sealant on the pinion yoke splines before reattaching the yoke by aligning its marks with those originally noted down. Tighten the pinion splines onto the pinion shaft with a soft-faced hammer until it reaches a few threads. Then install a new washer and pinion nut. Through the j 8614-01 tool maintain grip on the pinion yoke to torque the nut until the pinion end play reaches its limit then rotate the pinion for bearing seating. The rotating torque measurement requires an inch-pound torque wrench to check for 1.0 to 2.3 nm (10 to 20 inch lbs.) range for used bearings and 1.7 to 3.4 nm (15 to 30 inch lbs.) for new bearings.
