Buick Rainier Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on Buick Rainier?
    A:
The first step for Camshaft replacement requires removal of the Camshaft cover. The first step involves removal of the intake and exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolts. Use the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) to mount onto the Cylinder Head before adjusting horizontal bolts into the Camshaft sprockets which ensures chain tension and protects Timing Chain elements from disturbance. Move the Camshaft sprockets carefully along with Timing Chain off the camshafts before removing the Camshaft cap bolts while keeping the Camshaft caps in a rack for future reinstallation. Proceed to remove both Camshaft caps before extracting the camshafts. The installation process requires first coating all Camshaft journals and thrust face and lobes with clean engine oil before placing the intake along with exhaust camshafts back into their original locations. Follow the procedure using the Camshaft holding tool (J 44221) where Camshaft flats face upwards with the number 1 cylinder at top dead center position. The original positions of the directional and sequentially numbered Camshaft caps should receive installation before tightening their bolts to 12 n.m (106 lb in). Take out the Camshaft holding tool (J 44221), follow by slowly installing Camshaft sprockets on their respective camshafts while removing the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222). You should install the new intake Camshaft sprocket washer and bolt together with the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt while initially tightening the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt to 20 n.m (15 lb ft) in the first stage and finishing with a 100-degree tightening using the torque/angle meter (J 36660-A). Apply 25 n.m (18 lb ft) torque to the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt as your first step before completing the final stage with the torque/angle meter (J 36660-A) using 135-degree additional application. Finally, install the Camshaft cover.
