2004 Cadillac CTS Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Cadillac CTS?
A: Before starting lower intermediate Steering Shaft replacement always straighten the front wheels and maintain the Steering Column in lock position to minimize sir coil assembly risks from misalignment or damage. Use the lock position to turn the ignition cylinder and pull out the key. The j 42640 (J 42640) tool must be used to lock the Steering Column through the lower Steering Column trim cover access opening. Your first step should be to raise and support the vehicle while making a note about the shaft relations of the center intermediate to the lower intermediate. Remove first the retaining bolt that joins the center intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft and then remove the retaining bolt which connects the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear. Extract the lower intermediate shaft from its connection with the power steering gear before pulling it separately from the center intermediate shaft. Installation involves first connecting the lower intermediate shaft to the center intermediate shaft before adding it to the power steering gear. After installing the lower intermediate shaft's retaining bolt to the power steering gear apply 50 nm of torque (37 ft. Lbs.) before applying 30 nm torque (23 ft. Lbs.) to the center intermediate shaft's retaining bolt to the lower intermediate shaft. When the vehicle reaches its lowest point remove the j 42640 (J 42640) from the Steering Column lower trim cover access hole.
