Starting the front brake caliper overhaul requires removing it from the vehicle first. First insert a small piece of wooden repair tool at the front of the Piston before directing compressed air into the brake hose inlet port in order to protect the components. After you remove the Piston boot and Piston seal you should proceed by taking off the brake caliper bleed screw cap and bleed screw. Residual brake fluid inside the brake caliper bore must show no signs of severe scoring, corrosion above normal wear levels. The brake caliper housing needs replacement when damage is detected. Replacement becomes necessary when corrosion or wear exists on the mounting bracket guide surfaces. Clean all residue from the brake pad guiding surfaces on the brake caliper housing and mounting bracket before using denatured alcohol to clean all repair kit-excluded parts. Use filtered non-lubricated compressed air to dry all parts and blow out all passages in the brake caliper housing and bleeder valve until clean. To assemble the brake caliper install the bleed screw and cap first and then apply brake fluid gm p/n 12388967 (Canadian P/N 992667) on new Piston seals and brake caliper bore seal grooves making sure the seals remain untwisted. First use brake fluid to lubricate the brake caliper bores and pistons before installing the boot and Piston with the correct seating in both Piston and bore grooves. Repetition of Piston lubrication and installation should occur before placing the brake caliper in its original position on the vehicle.

How to replace the front brake calipers on GMC Safari?

Before starting the brake caliper replacement inspect the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; if it sits at the middle area add no fluids but drain some fluid if the level goes beyond it. Lift up the vehicle and take off the tire and wheel assembly. Use a C-clamp to push the brake caliper pistons toward the caliper while pressing the clamp over the housing against this side of the outboard pad until all pistons are fully retracted. After preparing the brake hose tip install a rubber cap to cover and shield the brake pipe opening from fluid loss or external contamination. Disconnect the brake hose to caliper bolt and discard the 2 copper gaskets since they may be attached to the caliper housing or brake hose end. Pull the brake hose off the caliper. When removing the brake caliper and mounting bolts do not push the brake pedal to prevent component harm. Take out the brake caliper from its mounting bracket location. Fit the brake caliper to its mounting bracket before securing it using 2 bolts and torquing them to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). Insert brake hose into caliper and apply 2 copper gaskets while fitting new rubber caps onto the brake port. Then attach the bolt connecting the brake hose to both components. Fasten the brake hose to the brake caliper by tightening it to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Let hydraulic brake fluid flow out then place tire wheels back into position and let the vehicle sink while filling the master cylinder reservoir to its required brake fluid level.
