The Starter is a complex component of the GMC Envoy that is needed to transform electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy in an effort to crank the engine. It works by means of an externally mounted solenoid that is connected to the battery to turn the starter motor. In the starter, there is a rotating armature which by acting on the field coils or permanent magnets offers the required torque. The starter drive meshes with the engine fly wheel when the ignition is on, it has an overrunning clutch that releases when the engine starts. Through the recent past, different kinds of starters have been used on GMC Envoy cars such as the gear reduction types to improve on efficiency. Although originally designed for use on standard engines, OE starters may not fit high compression engines especially if the latter needs a special type of starter in order to avoid kickback and subsequent failure. The changes in the type of starter technology indicate that the current cars require a starter that will last longer and at the same time, come with some efficiency.

GMC Envoy Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on GMC Envoy?
    A:
To service and repair the Starter motor, begin by disconnecting the battery negative cable. If the tyre on the left is a spare one, unwrap and remove it, and in the left fender section, unravel the battery positive lead from the solenoid. Next, remove the Starter mount bolt and nut (1,2) to offset the Starter motor. For installation, start by fitting back the Starter motor to its place. Put the Starter motor mount bolt and nut in position, tighten them accordingly, since they should be tightened to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Attach the positive Battery Cable to the Starter and tighten the nut securing the positive cable with a torque of 9 n.m (80 lb in). Replace the left tire and do the final connection of the negative cable of the battery.
  • Q: How to replace the starter motor on GMC Envoy?
    A:
Begin by disconnecting the battery negative cable followed by the vacuum brake booster hose removal. Start by separating the positive cable from the solenoid and unfastening and removing the s-terminal lead of the solenoid Starter. First remove the Starter motor by checking out the Starter mount bolt and nut (1, 2). Secure the Starter motor in position while using the Starter motor mount bolt and nut . Tighten these pieces to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Use a nut to connect the positive Battery Cable at the Starter solenoid lock and tighten it to 9 n.m (80 lb in). Tighten the nut on the s-terminal lead of the solenoid to achieve 2.3 n.m (20 lb in) torque. The vacuum brake booster hose should be reinstalled and battery negative cable connection must be made.
