Chevrolet SSR Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on Chevrolet SSR?
    A:
To replace the Camshaft, first bleed off air conditioning system and drain the cooling system. Remove the air cleaner housing assembly, the upper Radiator support, and the electrical from the cooling fans. Remove the transmission cooler lines from the Radiator, the a/c line refered to the condenser, the a/c line by the surge tank, the lower Radiator Hose from the Thermostat Housing, the upper Radiator Hose from water pump outlet, and the surge tank from the Radiator. Then remove the condenser/radiator/fan module as an assembly, then the timing etc sprocket s etc. Take the valve lifters out from the both cylinder heads and the Camshaft retainer bolts and retainer while being careful to not crack the Camshaft bearings since all the Camshaft journals are the same diameter. Take out the Camshaft installing three m8-1.25 x 100 mm (M8-1.25 x 4.0 inch) bolts into the holes on the front side of the Camshaft and use it as a handle to twist and draw the Camshaft out of the engine block then remove the bolts. Clean and inspect the cam and the bearings such that once a Camshaft is replaced, a valve lifter must also be replaced. It will be necessary to lubricate the cam shaft journals and the bearings with clean engine oil and insert the cam shaft into the engine block on the same three bolts as a handle and remove the bolts later. Put in the retainer plate such that the sealing gasket faces the engine block in a way that the gasket surface on the engine block is free and clean of any debris. Install the Camshaft retainer and bolts, snug but not tight 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.), then the Timing Chain and sprocket for Camshaft and then the valve lifters. Reassembly by placing the condenser/radiator/fan module as assembly, surge tank hose to the Radiator, upper Radiator Hose to the water pump outlet, lower Radiator Hose to Thermostat Housing, a/c line to the surge tank, a/c line to the condenser, and the transmission cooler lines to the Radiator. Connect the electrical to the cooling fans and install the upper Radiator support, air cleaner housing assembly, recharge the air conditioning system and fill the cooling system.
