  Replacement of the Steering Shaft upper bearing requires the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system to be disabled. First remove the Steering Column and then detach the sir coil together with the turn signal multifunction switch along with the ignition lock cylinder case and tilt spring and linear shift. Apply the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01) with the cam orientation plate adapter (J 42137) to eliminate and dispose of the bearing retainer. Extract the cam orientation plate together with the turn signal cancel cam assembly , upper bearing spring , upper bearing inner race seat , and inner race component from the Steering Column assembly. Insert the tilt lever onto the Steering Column tilt head assembly before pulling down the assembly away from the column by tugging back on the tilt lever while using the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01). Insert the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and remove the Steering Column tilt head assembly and then the tilt lever and upper bearing assembly. After placing the upper bearing assembly onto the Steering Column tilt head assembly install the Steering Column shaft assembly. Adjust the tilt knob to activate the steering wheel lock shoes positioning before coating the pivot pins with gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723). Then carefully place each pivot pin into the Steering Column tilt head assembly. Send the Steering Column support assembly underneath each pivot pin in three distinct areas before including the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640). First install the inner race along with the upper bearing inner race seat and upper bearing spring before placing the turn signal cancel cam assembly with gm p/n 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529) onto the steering assembly and cam orientation plate. Install the new bearing retainer onto the Steering Shaft assembly before compressing the cam orientation plate with the Steering Column lock plate compressor (J 23653-SIR) and cam orientation plate adapter (J 42137). Properly seat the bearing retainer in the Steering Shaft assembly's groove by releasing the Steering Column lock plate compressor (J 23653-SIR). After reassembly install the linear shift, tilt spring, turn signal multifunction switch, ignition lock cylinder case, sir coil in your vehicle before reinserting the Steering Column then enable the sir system.
