Buick Rainier Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on Buick Rainier?
    A:
Begin operations of removing and replacing the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable only when the sir system consists of disablement. Start by setting the Steering Column at its center position before undoing the Steering Wheel from its column followed by removing upper and lower trim covers. The inspection of accident damage should be conducted on the Steering Column. When the Steering Wheel has pad control the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil and wire harness assembly must be extracted together. The coil will be removed separately unless it was installed as one piece with the coil and wire harness assembly. Take out the wire harness strap and the wire harness assembly when appropriate. Use snap ring pliers to extract the retaining ring before you can remove the Steering Wheel module coil. Discard the wave washer when needed. During installation fit the wave washer and place the block tooth on the Steering Shaft assembly at the 12 o'clock position. New inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coils arrive with centering tabs already in place designed to stay until full installation. Reinstalled Steering Wheel module coils should always start with proper centering operations. Procedure includes Steering Wheel module coil alignment through the shaft lock or cam orientation plate towards the horn tower before sliding onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Before using snap ring pliers to install the retaining ring make sure it correctly seats in the groove between the race and upper shaft assembly. Also remove the centering tab from the coil. To install the Steering Wheel with pad control start with wire harness assembly then wire harness strap then upper and lower trim covers. Install the Steering Wheel to the column followed by activating the sir system.
