Buick Rainier Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on Buick Rainier?
    A:
Before replacing the upper intermediate Steering Shaft start by aligning front wheels forward while placing the Steering Column in lock position to avert installation misalignment. After switching off the ignition lock position access the steering wheel key. Insert the Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) through the trim cover's access hole on the lower Steering Column to lock the Steering Column. To gain access to the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate pinch bolt you must first unhook the air outlet duct then detach the upper intermediate shaft boot from the lower intermediate shaft boot. Disconnect the upper intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft by removing their pinch bolt. Note down the direction of the upper intermediate shaft to Steering Column pinch bolt before its removal to prevent installation errors. Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the Steering Column then disconnect it from the shaft before removing it from the vehicle. Start by attaching the upper intermediate shaft to the vehicle's body and link it to the Steering Column before commencing installation. Secure the upper intermediate shaft to the Steering Column by mounting its pinch bolt and attaching the nut with a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) while maintaining the same bolt installation direction as removal. Near the end of installation you should put the upper intermediate shaft into the lower intermediate shaft before installing both shafts and their pinch bolt. Then tighten this pinch bolt to a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Secure the upper intermediate shaft boot to the lower intermediate shaft boot so the boot fully engulfs the white insert on the lower intermediate shaft boot which enables proper sealing. To complete the installation you must put in the air outlet duct before unlocking the Steering Column by taking out the Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) from its access hole.
