- Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?A: Begin by checking the brake master cylinder auxiliary reservoir fluid level before starting replacement of the rear brake caliper. The fluid must be drained to the midway point if it exceeds the maximum-full point. The park brake lever boot needs removal from the floor console and park brake cables need their tension successfully released by completely loosening the adjusting nut. Lift up the vehicle while placing supports under it and unhook the tire assembly with its wheel components. Securely tighten two wheel nuts against opposing wheel studs to hold the rotor in place to the hub. End the park brake cable from its lever position on the caliper while also removing the retaining tabs securing the cable to the caliper bracket. Use a large c-clamp to carefully push the caliper piston into the caliper bore but never pass the 1 mm (0.039 in) piston travel threshold. After removing the c-clamp you must discard the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and brake hose while throwing away the 2 copper brake hose gaskets . Important: introduce plugs or caps to protect the brake caliper and hose from fluid leakage and outside contamination. Use a wrench on the flats of the caliper guide pins to remove brake caliper guide pin bolts until you can take off the brake caliper from the caliper bracket. Check if guide pins show movement and evaluate guide pin boots' state. Look for guide pin or boot problems before installing new guide pins or boots. After attaching the brake caliper to the caliper bracket the brake caliper guide pin bolts require installation with a torque of 34 nm (25 lb ft). Position the park brake cable end fitting on the caliper bracket then connect the park brake cable end to its corresponding lever on the caliper. After removing plugs from the caliper holes, install brand new hose gaskets along with the brake hose to the caliper. Secure the brake hose with a torque of 48 nm (35 lb ft) on the caliper bolt. Install the tire and wheel assembly while removing the wheel nuts securing the brake rotor to the wheel hub. Afterwards bleed the hydraulic brake system. When the engine is off apply the brake pedal until it reaches 2/3 of its travel distance. Release the pedal pressure and wait for 15 seconds before reapplying pressure for the required pad and piston seat. The final step is to tension the park brake cable while placing the park brake lever boot against the floor console and securing it there.
