2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the brake shoes on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The procedure starts with vehicle elevation followed by tire removal and then the Brake Drum needs extraction. The adjuster spring must not be over-stretched. You should be cautious about exceeding the maximum stretch of the adjuster spring throughout the operation. Start by releasing the adjuster spring through an unhooking motion from its tab on the adjuster actuator lever and withdrawing it from the Brake Shoe web hole. Use tool j 38400 to distribute the Brake Shoe tops apart so you can take off the adjuster assembly from the brake shoes after removing it from the pivot and adjuster actuator lever. Use the j 38400 hook end to position itself below the universal spring on the shoe web hole until you can sharply pull back the spring with light pressure while maintaining a hold on the shoe in order to remove the trailing Brake Shoe after releasing the park brake cable from the trailing shoe lever. The same installation procedure needs to be carried out on the leading Brake Shoe. The brake shoes need replacing if their lining measurement falls below 0.5 mm (0.020 in). The Brake Shoe contact surfaces of the Brake Backing Plate require thin application of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant. Use the j 38400 hook to arrange its end under the universal spring before hooking into the Brake Shoe web hole and connecting the park brake cable to the trailing Brake Shoe unit. Use the j 38400 tool to spread open the top of the brake shoes before mounting the trailing Brake Shoe on position. Afterward install the adjuster assembly. Secure the adjuster actuator lever properly to achieve ideal attachment of the adjuster assembly with the Brake Shoe and install the adjuster spring by ensuring its loop end reaches the tab on the actuator lever fully. After drum brake adjustment the technician should install the Brake Drum then install the tire wheel assembly and finally lower the vehicle.
