2007 Chevrolet Malibu Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion in the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) gear on 2007 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The replacement process for the Rack And Pinion gear begins by turning the Steering Wheel fully forward, securing it with a clamp then taking out the ignition key. First secure the vehicle with proper height and remove both front tires and wheels. Before separating the intermediate shaft from the steering rack, remove its pinch bolt (discarding it) while keeping the Steering Wheel oriented straight ahead to shield the sir coil from damage. When you separate the intermediate shaft, remove the tie rod end castle nuts using caution to prevent damage to the seal or bushing by not using pickle fork or wedge-type tools. The j 24319-b tool helps disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckles before professionals remove the rear transmission mount-to-transmission bolt and steering rack to frame bolts. After extracting the steering rack from the vehicle's left side, you must rotate it by 90 degrees to pass through the rear transmission mount. The process requires steering rack replacement to remove both outer tie rod ends. The outer tie rod ends need to be affixed at the steering rack before steering rack installation begins. While fitting the rack into position, make necessary rotations to avoid the rear transmission mount. First, tighten the steering rack frame bolts to 70 n.m (52 lb ft) and then add an additional 90 degrees of torque before tightening the rear transmission mount-to-transmission bolt to 90 n.m (66 lb ft). Follow the removal process to install an intermediate Steering Shaft to steering rack connection point. Tighten the new pinch bolt to 49 n.m (36 lb ft). Duct the outer tie rod ends into the steering knuckles and prevent the ball stud from rotating as you install new torque castle nuts with torque setting at 60 n.m (44 lb ft). Reinstall front tires then wheels on the vehicle before lowering it to measure wheel alignment while performing adjustments as needed.
