2007 Chevrolet HHR CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the outer CV Boot and CV Joint on the wheel drive shaft on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
A: To replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot, you should start with clamping the drive Axle Shaft in a soft jawed vice. Disengage the retaining tabs of the large seal clamp using a flat-bladed tool and discard, and remove the small seal clamp with side cutters and dispose of it. Remove and disengage the constant velocity (CV) joint boot from the cv joint race at the large diameter, push the boot off of the joint on the wheel drive shaft bar. Before you do this, rile off any excess grease from the face of the cv (inner race), slip a block of wood upon the cv (outer race), then tap it onto the wheel drive shaft bar to remove the joint from the cv of the wheel drive shaft bar. When you have finished, remove the seal and retaining ring on the cv joint on the wheel drive shaft bar. Pave the cv joint inner race with a brass drift and strike it sharply with a hammer to rotate the joint race, extracting the first bearing roller, and do as many times as necessary to pry all six rollers. Pivot the cv joint cage and inner race 90 degrees to the centerline of the outer race top against the cage windows with the lands of the outer race, lift out cage and inner race. Detach the inner race from the cage by turning it up slightly, and clean the inner and outer race assemblies, cv joint cage, and the rollers of the bearings using the appropriate solvent, followed by drying all affected components using compressed air. Check the cv joint cluster to ensure it is not unusually worn or cracked or damaged, replace any affected parts, and use a wire brush with to clean the wheel drive shaft bar to get rid of rusts on seal mounting grooves. Installation: fit the new small seal clamp on the neck of the outboard seal and do not clamp it, place the outboard seal onto the wheel drive shaft bar and fit it in the seal groove . Crimp the seal clamp with the help of j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) followed by the measurement of the clamp end gap that should not exceed 2.15 mm (0.85 in). Use a light coat of grease from the service kit on the bearing roller grooves of the inner, and outer races, hold the inner race 90 degrees to the center line of the cage with the lands of the inner race aligned with the windows of the cage and insert the inner race into the cage. Align the cage and inner race to a 90-degree angle from the centerline of the outer race and write the retaining ring side of the inner race to the wheel drive shaft bar before inserting into the outer race. Place the first bearing roller and then tilt the cage in order to place the opposite bearing roller, continuing until all six bearing rollers are in place. Mount cv joint retaining ring onto wheel drive shaft bar, grease cv joint utilizing service kit and fill about half into the outboard seal. Tap a block of wood onto the cv joint spindle so that the cv joint inner race hits the retaining ring, then push the large diameter of the seal of the cv race and place the lip in the housing groove. Use the j 46588 axle seal crimp tool (46588) to latch the large seal retaining clamp ensuring the latching tangs are fully engaged, remove the wheel drive shaft from the bench vise, and one time rotate the wheel drive shaft in a circular motion four to five time distributed the grease within the outer cv joint.
