GMC Safari Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on GMC Safari?
    A:
To replace the inflatable restraint steering wheel module air bag clock spring, first turn off the sir, and then remove the steering column tires of the driving column trim covers. Detach the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap while removing the three wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly and the wire harness strap from the upper tilt head assembly. Next, remove the sir steering wheel module air bag clock spring retaining clip and the sir steering wheel module air bag clock spring and take out the wave washer from the steering column upper shaft. For the installation align the block tooth in alignment with the upper shaft at the 12 high point with all fasteners seated properly before you follow it with the proper torque to prevent part failure. Mount the wave washer onto the steering column upper shaft while ensuring that the sir steering wheel module air bag clock spring is in the center; it may get uncentered should the steering column is fur off from the steering gear or if centering spring is pushed out-of-focus with the coil moved. In case of being uncentered, proceed with proper centerings for standard or tilt column. Set the steering wheel module air bag clock spring aligning it to the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam and slide the pre-centered coil onto steering column upper shaft. Pull out and dispose the tab at its center, gently tug the coil assembly wire at the bottom to get rid of its bends, and make sure there are no curves on the sir coil assembly wire to forego interference with the shaft lock mechanism. Install the sir steering wheel module air bag clock spring retaining ring to ensure that it is seated in the groove on upper shaft. Plug the wire harness assembly into the wire strap, attach the wire harness strap into the wire strap, and fix the wire harness straps to the wire harness assembly. Lastly, reinstall the steering column trim covers, and turn on the sir system.
  • Q: How to service and repair the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable on GMC Safari?
    A:
Disabling the sir system should be the first step in order to service and repair the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable. If equipped, take out the Steering Wheel and tilt lever, followed by the upper and lower shrouds. Remove the 3 wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly and remove the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap and pop it out. Next, unsecure the wire harness strap from the upper tilt head assembly, unsecure the coil assembly retaining clip and the coil assembly, and finally the wave washer. For installation, ensure all the fasteners are pulled down into position before applying the specified amount of torque to prevent component failure. Install the wave washer, and align then the block tooth on the race and the upper shaft assembly, set to the 12 o'clock figure to install the sir coil assembly, which must be centralized. In case the coil assembly is displaced by the Steering Column spinning turning or the centering spring are forced down, perform the inflatable restraint coil centering - off vehicle (Column Shift and Floor Shift) procedure. Install the pre-centered coil assembly to the Steering Column, take the centering tab off and throw it away. For alignment when installing the assembly of coil use the horn tower on the canceling cam assembly inner ring as well as the projections on the outer ring. Carefully pull on the lower coil assembly wire so as to remove any kinks on the sir coil assembly wire to ensure that there are no kinks or bends on the sir coil assembly wire in order to avoid interference with the shaft lock mechanism. Set in the coil assembly retaining ring that is fully seated in the groove of the upper shaft assembly. Pop the wire harness assembly in to the wire strap, install the wire harness strap into to the upper tilt head assembly, then pop the 3 wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly. Finally, replace the upper and lower shrouds, the tilt lever if equipped, and the Steering Wheel assembly and turn on the sir system.
