GMC Safari Ignition Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Ignition Control Module on GMC Safari?
    A:
Service and repair of the Ignition Control Module starts with the removal of the air cleaner assembly and nut followed by disconnecting electrical connectors. Start by removing the Ignition Coil wire from the Distributor followed by removing studs which secure both bracket and Ignition Coil to the Intake Manifold. Take out first the bracket and Ignition Coil then drill and punch out two rivets connecting the Ignition Coil bracket before removing the Ignition Coil from the bracket. The installation process starts with attaching the Ignition Coil to the bracket through the two screws found in the replacement Ignition Coil kit. Reinstall the Ignition Coil and bracket onto the Intake Manifold by using the studs then torque them to 11 n.m (8 lb ft). Secure the Ignition Coil wire but keep it at least 1 inch away from the dip stick to stop long-term grounding or shorting events. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly along with the nut before reconnecting electrical connectors to the system.
  • Q: How to replace the Ignition Control Module on GMC Safari?
    A:
When replacing the Ignition Control Module begin by removing the engine cover. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the electrical connector then remove the screws which fix the ignition control module and heat sink to their bracket. You should remove first the ignition control module and then the heat sink. Place the ignition control module and the heat sink on the bracket using screws which need to be tightened to 3.5 Nm (31 lb in.). After connection of electrical connectors you will need to put the engine cover in place.
