During assembly the cylinder needs to be held in place by using the J 41340 Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340). Use the illustrated key to identify the key position arrangement and record tumbler numbers at their lowest visible level for each slot between 1 and 9. Position each tumbler one after another inside its designated slot before slowly withdrawing the side bar to complete the tumbler seating. Each tumbler should receive a tumbler spring above it before the application of Superlube GM P/N 12346241 or equivalent. Feed the spring retainer through the slots at the cylinder end while pushing it down until total seat position. Check the spring retainer installation with the key inserted while the side bar sits at the proper cylinder diameter. If necessary, disassemble and reassemble. Set the cylinder into J 41340 while seating the spring retainer upward underneath the punch slots before tightening its holding screw. Use part of J 41340 to engage the flat side of the punch against the cylinder bezel to stoke the metal across retainers' corners. Apply the same staking process to the retainer's opposite end after rotating the punch by 180 degrees. Release the cylinder holding screw and take the J 41340 from the cylinder for inspection of the retainer's staking before restaking when necessary. Apply GM P/N 12345996 equivalent paste-type grease to the cylinder retainer slot before placing the retainer spring and retainer inside. Use this grease to optimize the retainer's performance.
