The Ignition Lock Cylinder in Chevrolet Malibu vehicles is used in starting of the engine by inserting and turning the right key. This component is connected internally within the body of the ignition switch that has the capacity to supply powers from the battery to other circuits that are responsible for the running of the ignition. Earlier Chevrolet Malibu cars had a column mounted ignition lock cylinder as an important feature of cars which was part of Chevrolet's effort to crank up the car's security system to a higher level to discourage car theft. As years went by, development came up with the inclusion of a keyless ignition system in the newer models of Chevrolet Malibu, which in essence makes starting the car a much easier process without via the need for a key. Mechanically, the old ILCs were operated by key and tumbler mechanisms whereas the new ILCs work with the help of keyless fobs with computer connections making them more reliable for the car and having fewer parts in them. However, such concerns as wear and defects in the ignition lock cylinder remains a cause of starting difficulties with both basic and without a key types of systems.

Chevrolet Malibu Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the ignition lock cylinder on Chevrolet Malibu?
    A:
In order to replace the ignition lock cylinder; have the knee bolster removed first. Then turn the ignition switch to the run position and depression of ignition lock cylinder tab to take the ignition lock cylinder with you. In the case of installing a new lock cylinder, code the key and lock cylinder correctly. Finally, put the ignition lock cylinder and reattach the knee booster.
  • Q: How to service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chevrolet Malibu?
    A:
Service and repair professionals should start with a five-character key code search to locate the key on the barcode tag before cutting new ignition lock cylinders. During assembly the cylinder needs to be held in place by using the J 41340 Ignition Lock Holding Fixture (J 41340). Use the illustrated key to identify the key position arrangement and record tumbler numbers at their lowest visible level for each slot between 1 and 9. Position each tumbler one after another inside its designated slot before slowly withdrawing the side bar to complete the tumbler seating. Each tumbler should receive a tumbler spring above it before the application of Superlube GM P/N 12346241 or equivalent. Feed the spring retainer through the slots at the cylinder end while pushing it down until total seat position. Check the spring retainer installation with the key inserted while the side bar sits at the proper cylinder diameter. If necessary, disassemble and reassemble. Set the cylinder into J 41340 while seating the spring retainer upward underneath the punch slots before tightening its holding screw. Use part of J 41340 to engage the flat side of the punch against the cylinder bezel to stoke the metal across retainers' corners. Apply the same staking process to the retainer's opposite end after rotating the punch by 180 degrees. Release the cylinder holding screw and take the J 41340 from the cylinder for inspection of the retainer's staking before restaking when necessary. Apply GM P/N 12345996 equivalent paste-type grease to the cylinder retainer slot before placing the retainer spring and retainer inside. Use this grease to optimize the retainer's performance.
