- Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Gear and timing chain sprockets on Chevrolet Malibu?A:In order to replace the Timing Chain and sprockets, you start by removing the engine front cover. Back off the timing marks: align the camshaft alignment pin and the Timing Chain dampener to the Crankshaft sprocket. Next, take off a bolt of the camshaft sprocket, followed by camshaft sprocket with Timing Chain, and then remove a Crankshaft sprocket. The Timing Chain dampener bolts and the dampener to be removed. In case necessary, take off the camshaft thrust plate bolts and the thrust plate. Regularcleaning and inspection of the Timing Chain and gears are very necessary. For installation if the camshaft thrust plate was removed, mount it back and apply 10 nm (89 inch lbs) on the bolts. Fit Crankshaft sprocket and coat with engine oil supplement (EOS) gm p/n1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) on thrust face of the sprocket. Replace the Timing Chain dampener and tighten the dampener bolts at 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Start by attaching the Timing Chain on the camshaft gear, hold the camshaft sprocket with the chain trailing down, and attach it to the Crankshaft gear. Align Crankshaft Crankshaft timing mark with the timing mark on the bottom of Timing Chain dampener and align timing mark on the camshaft gear, center line of the locator hole , with the timing mark using the top of the chain dampener . Make sure dowel in the cam shaft enters the dowel hole in the cam shaft sprocket. Mount the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft using the mounting bolt and tighten to the 140 nm, (103 ft.ibs). Lastly, apply engine oil to the Crankshaft and camshaft sprocket and then fit the engine front cover back.

Crank shaft gear remover ( J 5825-A) and crank shaft gear installer (J 5590). The first step is to take off the engine front cover and the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. Install to rotate the engine, should be a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt at the end of the crankshaft making sure it is not the crankshaft balancer bolt or over an inch long and it will cause harm. Support the crankshaft with the socket wrench by holding it in place and rotate it all the way until the mark on the second sprocket is lined up with the first one and cylinder number four is up at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Next, unbolt the camshaft sprocket bolts, and then camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. Replace the Crankshaft Gear remover (J 5825-A) to remove the crankshaft sprocket and extract the crankshaft balancer key.
