Is it more practical and economical to replace a faulty oil pump with a new or rebuilt unit, and what steps should be taken if an overhaul is chosen in V8 engine on Chevrolet Caprice?

As for the removal, most often it is more cost effective and efficient to replace the faulty oil pump with a new or rebuilt one, however, if an overhaul is to be done, ensure that there is internal parts available before proceeding. Start by the removal of several screws and the pump which cover is then followed by the removal of markings on the gear's teeth. Subsequently, remove the idler gear, the drive gear and the shaft from the body, the pressure regulator valve retaining pin, the regulator valve and other related components. In case these components have to be retrieved the pick-up screen and pipe assembly can be removed from the pump body. Wash all the parts with solvent and then heat them till dry, before examining the body for cracks or wear, or else the gears . Looseness of the drive gear shaft in the pump body should be checked as well as the inside of the pump cover for signs of wear and thus oil leak out. Check the pick-up screen for any damage and likewise the pipe assembly. Use gasket sealant where the pipe ends and tap it into the pump body, one has to be very careful not to damage the pump so that one can achieve the press-fit required; if the press-fit cannot be made, then a new set of assembly has to be used because of loss of pressure due to air leakage. Screw in the pressure regulator valve machinery and related accessories, then put the gear of the drive and shaft in the pump body, then place the idler gear on the side which is facing the area where the cover of the pump is opened and grease the machinery with the engine oil. By so doing, fit the cover and tighten the screws to the required torque then give the driveshaft a turn to ensure that the pump is free to rotate.

How should the oil pump gears and body be serviced and reassembled on Chevrolet Nova?

Pump gears and body do not make any requirements for service individually; if they become worn or damaged, the total pump will need to be replaced. Start with the mere removal of the pump cover retaining screws, the cover as well as noting the positions of the gear teeth so that they may be reinstalled in their intended positions. Then, remove idler gear and drive gear and shaft from the body, later pressure regulator valve retaining pin, valve and some related parts. If so required, only the pick-up screen and pipe assembly can be unbolted and pulled out of the pump body. In cleaning, immerse all parts in a solvent and dry them satisfactorily, scrutinizing the body on any signs of crack or wear or damage as well as the gears. Check the revolve of drive gear shaft; looseness in the face of the pump body for sanctions of typical vibrations; and, examine the inner surface of the pump cover for wear which might bring about oil leakage. Also check the pick up screen and pipe assembly for damages. Put on the gasket sealant on the terminal end of the pipe and insert into the pump body without damaging it; if the direct press-fit is not achievable, a rear assembly has to be done to minimize loophole in the pipe that may cause air leaks and loss of pressure. Place the pressure regulator valve and other componentaries as well as the drive gear and shaft in the pump body; the idler gear placed in such a manner that the smooth side faces the opening of the pump cover. All blind holes in the pump and between the gears are to be packed with petroleum jelly to facilitate priming. Last, put the cover on and fasten the screws, after that rotate the drive shaft to ensure that the pump is not bound.
