  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle in the rear suspension on 2009 Cadillac STS?
    A: Steering Knuckle replacement in the rear suspension starts by raising the vehicle before supporting it then removing the wheel and tire. Start by removing the rear brake rotor and continue by discarding the wheel driveshaft nut. Disconnect both antilock brake system (ABS) sensor harness connectors from the backing plate. You must first disconnect the Parking Brake Cable from its attachment to the parking brake lever and the knuckle by removing its bracket. Use tool (J 43631) to remove the ball stud from the knuckle after you pull off the upper ball joint mounting nut. Set a suitable jack below the lower Control Arm before you start to remove the lower shock mounting bolt and Trailing Arm to knuckle mounting bolt and nut and the lower Control Arm to knuckle mounting bolt along with the adjustment link to knuckle mounting bolt. Use the cj129 universal hub puller - snap-on or the 7394 universal hub puller - otc to remove the wheel drive shaft from the wheel bearing/hub assembly. First remove the knuckle from the vehicle then remove the wheel bearing/hub bolts and extract the knuckle together with the backing plate from the wheel bearing/hub. Install the knuckle and backing plate on the wheel bearing/hub while making sure to tighten all wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts to 125 nm (92 lb ft). Begin by loosely installing all fasteners and finish by tightening the adjustment link to knuckle mounting bolt to 160 nm (118 lb ft) and the Trailing Arm to knuckle mounting bolt and nut to 170 nm (125 lb ft) and the lower shock mounting bolt to 150 nm (111 lb ft). Replace the upper ball joint across the knuckle assembly after setting the upper ball joint mounting nut. Reinstall the Parking Brake Cable bracket to the knuckle while removing the jack and applying the abs sensor electrical connectors to their respective places on the backing plate and sensor. Follow these steps to install a new wheel drive shaft nut at 160 nm (118 lb ft) torque before adding the brake rotor and tire and wheel assembly. Finish by lowering the vehicle.
