• Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2008 Chevrolet Impala?

  A: Lift and prop the vehicle to replace the intermediate Steering Shaft. Disassembly of the tire and wheel assembly while you keep the front wheels in the straight position and the Steering Column in lock position to ensure they do not look misaligned. Insert the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) to the bottom of the Steering Column and access the lower pinch bolt from the power steering gear stub shaft to be removed. Remove the intermediate Steering Shaft from the power steering gear stub shaft and lower the vehicle. Then take off the left closeout panel and reposition the intermediate Steering Shaft seal to allow upper pinch bolt be accessed. Take off the upper pinch bolt, and disengage the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Steering Column before detaching it totally. During installation, locate the new intermediate Steering Shaft and clamp this to the Steering Column with the top pinch bolt then tighten to 62 n.m (46 lb ft). Put the intermediate Steering Shaft seal onto the Steering Column then once more raise and supporting the vehicle again. Join the intermediate Steering Shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft to fix it with the lower pinch bolt turned to 48 n.m (35 lb ft). Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) must be removed, the intermediate Steering Shaft seal must be installed to the power steering gear, the tire and wheel assembly must then be reinstalled while lowering the vehicle, and then lastly, the left closeout panel must also be installed.
