  A: Start by emptying the cooling system when replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Start by taking away the intake manifold cover and air cleaner outlet duct. The engine coolant temperature sensor requires detachment of its fuel injector harness electrical connector before sensor removal. A sensor mounting hole in the engine head needs to be tapped clean first to discard any thread sealant residue then a sensor cleanup process should be performed followed by RTV sealant application if reinstalling the old sensor. Apply thread sealant from GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or any equivalent to the sensor threads before you install the ECT sensor and torque it to 20 N.m (15 lb ft). The ECT sensor gets its electrical connector back from the fuel injector harness after you reattach the air cleaner outlet duct and intake manifold cover goes back into place. Fill the cooling system afterward.
