The first step involves wearing safety glasses while performing shock absorber drilling and center-punching because these operations should avoid breaking the shock absorber tube. A centerpunch tool should make a 50 mm indentation at 2 inches from the top of the tube. Make a second indentation 25 mm (1.0 inch) away from the bottom boundary of the tube. The shock absorber needs to remain securely clamped in a vise when placed horizontally with its shock absorber rod fully extended. Use a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit to make a hole at the first centerpunch mark into the shock absorber while allowing gas or blended gas and oil to escape; collect the escaping oil with shop towels. To simultaneously drain oil from the shock absorber during drilling use the same drill setup to punch the second centerpunch location. To finish oil removal place the shock absorber in a drain pan opening where the holes should face downwards. You must slow push and pull the rod at this time to fully drain the shock absorber of its oil contents.
