To replace the brake pipe, use the J 45405 Brake Pipe Flaring Kit (J 45405) and make sure to use double-walled steel brake pipe so that no failure of brake system can occur. Start by examining the section of the brake pipe to be fixed or replaced, and release it from the retainers for the purpose. Take the length of the old pipe to be replaced, plus the sufficient flares. The B (pe) value should be 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) for 4.76 mm (3/16 inch) and 9.50 mm (0.374 inch) for 6.35mm (1/4 inch) pipe. Use the pipe cutter supplied in the J 45405 and cut the brake pipe off at its right angles. Choose the correct size of brake pipe and tube nuts, strip off the nylon coating from the end which is to be flared with the coating stripping tool part of J 45405, and chamfer the id and od of the pipe using the de-burring tool part of the J 45405. Mount the tube nuts, clean the brake pipe and the J 45405 of contaminants, and flare the pipe - loosen the screw securing the die and take the die set for the hose size. Push the prepared end of the pipe into the die cage, fasten the clamping screw, and use the forming mandrel to flare it. After flaring, inspect the brake pipe flare to check for perfect shape and diameter: For 4.76mm(3/16 inch) diameter pipe, 6.92mm(0.272 inch) and, for 6.35mm(1/4 inch) diameter pipe 8.92mm(0.351 inch). Use a proper brake pipe bending tool and shape the new pipe if necessary to install a proper union and fasten it to the retainers, then release the air from the hydraulic brake system, lastly check for leaks by starting the engine and using the brakes, assisted.
