Safety glasses must be worn to protect eyes during shock absorber centerpunching as well as drilling yet always keep the tube free from puncture damage. Begin hole indentation 10 mm (0.4 inch) below the tube bottom using a centerpunch. Mount the shock absorber inside a vise at a horizontal position using complete shock absorber rod extension. Use a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit on the centerpunch holes to allow exhaust of gas or mixed gas and oil. Control the oil discharge with shop towels. Using a centerpunch, create a second indentation in the middle of the tube followed by a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit. This operation releases the oil for which you should again use shop towels as containment. Release the shock absorber from the vise before positioning it across a drain pan with the holes directed downward and the rod inserted through the tube to empty all oil from the absorber.
