2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: To change the front brake pads, first check the fluid level of the Brake Master Cylinder auxiliary reservoir; if the level is higher than halfway up to the maximum-full point, bring down to the halfway mark. Lift and suspend the vehicle, then take out the tire and wheel assembly. Install and hand-tighten 2 wheel nuts to the opposite wheel studs to anchor rotor to hub. Place a large c-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the ends against the rear of the caliper body and the outboard Brake Pad tightening it until the caliper piston is compressed sufficiently to slide past the break rotor. Remove the c-clamp and the brake caliper lower guide pin bolt, holding the caliper with heavy mechanic's wire to avoid the damage of the hydraulic flexible brake hose. Prep the brake pads and Brake Pad retainers out of the caliper mounting bracket, also removing any debris and corrosion from the mating surfaces. Check the brake caliper guide pins for movement and the guide pin boots condition, replacin them if there are any problems. Another large c-clamp should then be used to compress the caliper piston totally into the caliper bore. Use a light coating of high temp silicone brake lub on the pad hardware mating surface of the bracket to the caliper and install the Brake Pad retainers. Mount the wear sensor fitted disc brakepublic Brake Pad and install it inboard of the rotor with leading edge towards the brake rotor and install the brakepublic Brake Pad to the caliper bracket. Rotate the brake caliper into place over the disc brake pads and remove the support after which instruction the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt to be tightened to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs). Remove the tire and wheel assembly and reinstall them, lower the vehicle and with the engine switched off, slow apply braking of the pedal to 2/3 pedal travel distance and release at a slow rate. Wait for 15 seconds and apply the brake pedal again until a firm feel is achieved to have the brake caliper pistons and brake pads sitting correctly. Finally, fill the master cylinder auxiliary reservoir to the right level and burnish the pads and rotors.
