2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Inspection of the brake master cylinder auxiliary reservoir should be done first in order to replace the rear brake caliper: if the reading is above mid-way to the mark of maximum full and minimum allowable mark, drain to the mid-way mark. Release the park brake lever boot from the floor console and remove adjusting nut fully with hand tools and park brake lever in released position. Lift and support the vehicle, then take of the tire and wheel assembly. Mount and manually tighten 2 wheel nuts to the opposite wheel studs to provide retention of rotor to the hub. Remove the end of the park brake cable from the lever on the caliper as well as retaining tabs, positioning the park brake cable to bracket on the caliper. Apply the large c-clamp to compress the caliper piston into caliper bore, but do not compress more than 1 mm (0.039 inch) of piston movement to displace the altering mechanism's inside mechanism. Unhook the c-clamp, then remove the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and brake hose, and dispose of the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. Cap or plug the brake caliper and brake hose openings in order to avoid fluid loss and contamination. While applying a wrench on the flats of the caliper guide pins, remove the brake caliper guide pin bolts and remove the brake caliper from the caliper bracket by lifting up the brake shoes. Check brake caliper guide pins for movement and guide pin boots condition on ones that are restricted, loose, seized or torn. Brake caliper guide pin bolts and tighten them up to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs. ) once you have attached the brake caliper to caliper bracket. Pressure the park brake cable end fitting into the bracket on the caliper and secure park brake cable end to the caliper lever. Take off caps or plug the brake caliper opening and brake hose, then install new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and brake hose. Install the brake hose and the brake hose to brake caliper bolt onto the brake and tighten the bolt to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Bleed the hydraulic brake system after that, remove the wheel nuts retaining the brake rotor to the hub of the wheel and mount the tire and wheel assembly. Filter off the vehicle and, with the engine off, smoothly apply the brake pedal to about 2/3 of its travel length and then release it at a slow rate. After waiting for 15 seconds, test the brake pedal again until it achieves a perfect brake pedal, in order to ensure the brake caliper pistons and brake pads are properly seated. Tighten the park brake cable tension and park brake lever boot to the floor console, placing the boot retainer and snap in place.
