2005 Cadillac CTS Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Drive Shaft on 2005 Cadillac CTS?
A: Start by suspending the vehicle before you take off the exhaust system as the first step to install a new propeller shaft in the cts-v. A suitable jack along with heavy mechanical wire must support the propeller shaft around its support bearing as well as the front propeller shaft near its rear constant velocity (CV) joint. First detach the bolts that secure the support bearing to the vehicle underbody before marking the differential flange CV Joint position on the propeller shaft. Then you can remove the CV Joint bolts from the differential flange. Keep the propeller shaft coupler attached to its shaft during the removal process by only withdrawing the bolts from the coupler-to-transmission flange. The support device must descend after moving the propeller shaft forward to separate the CV Joint from the differential flange and then reposition the shaft backward to detach from the transmission flange before extracting it from the vehicle. The propeller shaft coupler needs examination for indicator signs such as splitting, deep cracking and distorted or missing mounting bolt bushings. If such conditions exist, the propeller shaft requires replacement. Thorough inspection of the CV Joint assembly includes checks for grease leakage and boot damage in addition to heat-caused damage. The propeller shaft needs replacement when any issues are detected. The inspection of flange and shaft components should include replacement of damaged or worn nuts, bolts and washers. Before installation clean the transmission flange centering pin along with the propeller shaft centering bushing using a clean shop cloth and position the propeller shaft nearby the support bearing. The front propeller shaft coupler needs to be attached to the transmission flange after a small amount of lubricant gm p/n 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037) has been applied to the centering bushing and the bolts leading to the flanges have been properly installed. Position the propeller shaft forward for installation to the differential flange then wipe threads with denatured alcohol and apply threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt which needs to cure for 10 minutes. The procedure begins with installing the coupler-to-differential flange washers onto the coupler-to-transmission flange bolts. Next install coupler-to-transmission flange bolts along with washers onto the differential flange and coupler. Then install coupler-to-differential flange nuts before fastening all bolts to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs). Install the CV Joint-to-differential flange bolts with threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) after the curing process completes and tighten them in order (1-6) to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Secure the support device to maintain the support bearing in position before installing center support bearing bolts to the underbody while tightening the nuts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Afterwards, take off support devices and reattach the exhaust system before lowering the vehicle.
