2004 Chevrolet Malibu Oxygen Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) located pre-catalyst on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: To replace the heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) pre-catalyst, start with the removal of Exhaust Manifold heat shield. Remove the o2s harness connector & then the o2s (be mindful of not causing any damage to the person attached pigtail & connector that can hinder the working of the sensor). Do not use too much force not to damage the threads in the Exhaust Manifold/pipe and make sure that in-line connector and louvered-end do not contain such an element as grease, dirt, or some other contaminant. The o2s is difficult to remove when the engine temperature is less than 48°c (120°F). For installation, coat the o2s threads with the special anti-seize compound if only after the compound consists of a liquid graphite with glass beads, which makes its unmountable simpler in the future. Replace things into the o2s and tighten it to 30 n.m (22 lb.), and then reconnect the o2s harness and replace the Exhaust Manifold heat shield.
