2001 Chevrolet Venture Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2001 Chevrolet Venture?
A: Secure the Brake Master Cylinder by mounting the flange in a vise so you can access the back of the primary Piston. Check the external surface of the master cylinder reservoir near the cap before taking it off to replace components that show damage to the cap or diaphragm. You will need a smooth rounded tool to push down the primary Piston then separate the Piston retainer and primary Piston from the cylinder. Insert plugs into all master cylinder ports while pushing filtered non-lubed air through the front port to extract the secondary Piston along with primary and secondary seals along with the return spring. Discard the primary Piston assembly and its attached seals afterward. Thoroughly wash denatured alcohol through master cylinder interior and exterior plus secondary Piston and return spring components while looking for damaged areas and changing the master cylinder when findings show up. Use non-lubricated filtered air to dry all parts before applying delco supreme 11 (GM P/N 12377967) brake fluid or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid to lubricate the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and other components from a sealed clean container. Combine the new primary seal parts onto the secondary Piston and install the return spring with both seals before inserting the lubricated primary Piston assembly into the cylinder. Press the primary Piston into place with a smooth tool to put in the new Piston retainer. Add the master cylinder reservoir and keep its parts in place. End the process by placing the master cylinder back into its vehicle location.
