The Axle Shaft in Chevrolet Tracker cars function to transmit torque coming from the differential to the differential causing the wheels to turn independently to enhance the traction while turning. Chevrolet Tracker Sedan & Chevrolet Tracker Active models use both the solid axle and halfshaft systems in accordance with their suspension type. Solid axles are usually found in vehicles with old model while the half shafts are used in those vehicles which have independent suspension system connecting the transaxle with the wheels. In applying the use of these two axle types, the Chevrolet Tracker has been using live axles, specifically for weight bearing and torque delivery at some occasions and at other instances using split axles to provide additional comfort to the car. It is clear that the differences between these types are in their structure and purpose scheme, but where the walking beam provides heavy-duty performance, half-shafts are more suitable for smooth running. Routine checks need to be done from time to time because if the parts are worn out, loud sounds, whirls, and complete malfunction of the Axle Shaft system of Chevrolet Tracker automobiles may occur.

Chevrolet Tracker Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the left axle shaft on Chevrolet Tracker?
    A:
The first procedure when replacing the left wheel drive shaft consists of lifting and supporting the vehicle. Start repairs by removing the four skid plate bolts and the front skid plate if equipped and then the front tire and wheel assembly. Start by unpacking the Axle Shaft remover tool (J37780) to extract the six bolts and flange from the drive Axle Shaft. After that, remove the snap ring and spindle washer. After supporting the front Control Arm with a hydraulic jack, remove the three nuts and three bolts which will disconnect the Steering Knuckle and lower Ball Joint. Apply slow pressure to the hydraulic jack to reduce coil spring tension before removing the wheel-side drive axle joint from the Steering Knuckle. First make reference points on the drive Axle Shaft's inner flange and differential side joint flange then remove all three axle bolts and nuts and differential flange from the inner shaft flange. A series of steps includes removing the drive shaft axle assembly and thrust washer along with the oil seal so reference marks can be made for accurate reinstallation positions. Seal the drive Axle Shaft boot band according to the reference points while using three bolts and three nuts to fasten the components before tightening the differential side joint bolts and nuts to 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). Once you slide the Axle Shaft wheel joint into the Steering Knuckle position you can resume normal vehicle operations with a hydraulic jack holding the Control Arm before reinstalling and securing the Steering Knuckle and Ball Joint joint with three nuts and bolts to a torque of 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.). Secure the drive Axle Shaft spindle washer with a snap ring followed by gm sealant application (GM P/N 1052366) on the flange area and co-install the six flange bolts while torquing them to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the front tire alongside the wheel assembly before you install the drive axle oil seal and drive Axle Shaft assembly while maintaining proper reference mark alignment. Install the wheel-side joint of the front drive Axle Shaft into the Steering Knuckle after securing all flange bolts and nuts and tightening differential side joint bolts to 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). The front Control Arm receives hydraulic jack support so install the Steering Knuckle followed by the lower Ball Joint and secure with three nuts and three bolts which should be tightened to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.). Lift the vehicle and secure a hydraulic jack underneath to support the front Control Arm. After installing the flange and tightening all six flange bolts to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) install the front skid plate if equipped using four bolts that must be tightened to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.).
  • Q: How to service the left front axle shaft on Chevrolet Tracker?
    A:
To service the left front Axle Shaft, loosen and raise the vehicle, then unbolt the 4 skid plate bolts and the front skid plate if equipped. Next, remove the front tire and wheel assembly, followed by removingthe 6 bolts and the flange. Remove the drive Axle Shaft snap ring and the drive Axle Shaft spindle washer from the drive Axle Shaft. Work the reference marks on the inner Axle Shaft flange and the differential side joint flange of the drive Axle Shaft for proper installation. Unbolt the 3 bolts, 3 nuts and the joint flange of differential joint while working from the inner Axle Shaft flange and then pull out the drive shaft axle assembly. For installation, insert the wheel-side joint of the drive front Axle Shaft into the Steering Knuckle then attach the differential side joint flange of the drive Axle Shaft to the inner Axle Shaft flange, the reference marks line up. Secure the 3 pushnuts and place the 3 bolts, tightening them to 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). Close the tire lock. Next, have the drive Axle Shaft spindle washer on the drive Axle Shaft, then drive Axle Shaft snap ring at the drive axle end. Apply general motors sealant, gm p/n 1052366 to the flange before attaching it and fastening it with the 6 flange bolts, should be tightened to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). If installed, reinstall the front skid plate and bolt four of them, ensuring complete tightness with 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Finally, re-install the front tire and wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
