Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Classic Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Classic?
    A:
As part of sprocket and Timing Chain replacement begin by removing the Oil Pump and rotating the Crankshaft to achieve proper Crankshaft and camshaft sprocket alignment. After removal of the chain keep the Crankshaft still to protect piston assemblies and valves. You should start by removing the camshaft sprocket bolts then remove the sprocket and the Timing Chain. To remove the Crankshaft sprocket workers should use j 8433 (Two Jaw Puller) j 41816-2 (Crankshaft End Protector) and j 41558 (Crankshaft Sprocket Remover) before removing the Crankshaft sprocket key if needed. Inspect the Timing Chain as well as the sprockets before cleaning them only if necessary. Start your installation process by inserting the key into the Crankshaft keyway then tap until the key seats completely. Place the Crankshaft sprocket on the Crankshaft front while lining up the keyway of the sprocket with the key of the Crankshaft. Then use the j 41665 (Crankshaft Balancer and Sprocket Installer) to push the sprocket fully against the Crankshaft flange. Position the Crankshaft sprocket alignment mark at the 12 o'clock position to verify the camshaft sprocket locating pin matches the sprocket alignment hole as the sprocket teeth fit with the Timing Chain and both sprocket alignment marks should match with the camshaft sprocket alignment mark at the 6 o'clock position. Place the camshaft sprocket along with the Timing Chain in position before using necessary adjustments to the camshaft or Crankshaft sprockets to set their timing marks correctly. Next install camshaft sprocket bolts before tightening them to 35 nm (26 ft.lbs.) and reinstalling the Oil Pump.
