  The first step to replace the Axle Shaft oil seal requires you to raise and support the vehicle properly. A drain pan coupled with the right container should be positioned below the transaxle while utilizing a socket wrench to remove the transaxle oil level/filler plug and transaxle Drain Plug which will drain the transaxle oil. Use j 28712 drive Axle Shaft boot protector (J 28712) to protect differential-side and wheel-side joints before pulling the drive axle from the vehicle and the drive Axle Shaft oil seal from the transaxle. The j 35538 Axle Shaft seal installer (J 35538) combined with hammers will be used for new drive Axle Shaft oil seal installation. Strike using a driver-side hammer and strike with a passenger-side hammer with a socket while keeping the seal's spring side facing outward. Before installing the new seal add j 36850 transjel- transmission assembly lubricant (J 36850) to the lip. The drive Axle Shaft surface should be smooth without scoring or burrs and needs to be replaced if these conditions are present. Use gm p/n 12346004 or equivalent on the transaxle Drain Plug threads and install the j 28712 while tightening it to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). The technician should slowly pour 2.4 liters (2.5 quarts) of castrol syntorq transmission fluid gm p/n 12346190 or equivalent into the transaxle through its oil level/filler plug hole until the fluid reaches the bottom of the hole. Threads on the transaxle oil level/filler plug require gm p/n 1236004 or equivalent lubricant for application before installing the plug with a torque of 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Raise the vehicle using suitable equipment then remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.
