Chevrolet Monte Carlo Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the lower ball joint on Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
    A:
Use a jack and stands to lift the vehicle before you take off the tire and wheel to replace the lower Ball Joint. Drill a starter hole through all rivets before moving onward to complete drilling each one. Strike rivet heads off using a chisel and hammer. Take off the cotter pin from the ball stud and turn the ball stud nut loose. Insert the j 41820 Ball Joint/stud separator tool between the ball stud and lower Control Arm before turning the ball stud nut to the left and parting the ball stud from the Steering Knuckle. Take off the Ball Joint/stud separator (J 41820) part along with the ball stud nut and ball stud from the Control Arm below. Insert the ball stud on the lower Control Arm and bolt down its nuts with their heads pointing away from the stud. Set new ball stud nuts at 68 nm by hand tightening them. Secure the ball stud to the Steering Knuckle by tightening its nut until it reaches at least 55 nm. Insert the ball stud castle nut and turn it first to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) then an extra 120 degrees. Use the castle nut torque to match the position of the hole with the cotter pin. Place the new cotter pin into the wheel stud slots while making sure its ends avoid both the abs wheel speed sensor and its electrical connector as well as the drive axle. Bend the new cotter pin ends afterward. Put the tire back on the wheel and let the vehicle return to its resting position before testing wheel balance.
