  The first step to replace the shift control cable in a mu3 - manual transmission requires applying the parking brake and placing the transmission in 4th gear. The console needs removal before cable retainers can be lifted and cable ends must be detached from the shift control assembly with proper location marks made for reassembly. The first step involves taking the transmission Shift Cable ends off their positions at the shift levers before extracting the Shift Cable out of its bracket while raising and supporting the vehicle. The operator first removes the underbody Shift Cable nut before lowering the vehicle and taking out the left instrument panel insulator. The driver's floor opening requires cable insertion after separating the grommet from the Floor Pan while moving the driver's side front carpet out of the way. To install the cable assembly push it through the driver's floor opening before setting the grommet to rest evenly with the floor opening and placing back the driver's side front carpet and left instrument panel insulator. The vehicle should be raised before attaching the Shift Cable nut to the underbody and adjusting its tightness to 10 nm (89 lb in). Place the shift cables on the transmission cable bracket before joining their ends to correct transmission shift levers which were identified during cable removal. When attaching the Shift Cable to the shift control assembly it is essential to carefully free the 4th gear locking tab through ring shifter pullup and clamping its tabs with locking pliers. Complete the shift control assembly housing 4th gear lock tab then secure the transmission in 4th gear before applying pressure to cable retainers while repositioning the shifter 4th gear lock clip to its original alignment and finally install the console.
