The first step to service the fluid filter of the 4l60-e/4l65-e/4l70-e automatic transmission requires the vehicle to be raised before placement of a drain pan under the transmission
Oil Pan. The range selector cable bracket may require bolt removal to achieve clearance as you lower the Oil Pan without breaking the cable connection. Drain plug removal from the Oil Pan should be performed at this time if it exists. Start by taking off the
Catalytic Converter before removing front-side Oil Pan bolts and setting the rear bolts loose by 4 turns. A rubber mallet helps drain the fluid when tapped gently against the Oil Pan after which all bolts can be removed to detach the Oil Pan assembly including its gasket. Twist the filter firmly before taking out the filter seal while following up by discarding it. Check the fluid color and examine the filter simultaneously for any presence of clutch materials as well as bronze slivers or steel particles. Solve the transmission and Oil Pan gasket contact points with solvent to eliminate remaining gasket residue before application. Install the new filter by contacting its seal with automatic transmission fluid then using a suitable sized socket to tap it into position. Install the Oil Pan while using a new gasket by tightening its bolts evenly to 11 n.m (97 lb in) using an alternating pattern. Install the Catalytic Converter followed by the range selector cable bracket if required along with its bolts that need tightening at 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Before installing the equipped Oil Pan Drain Plug thread with gm p/n 12346004 sealant and secure it using 18 n.m (13 lb ft) torque force. The technician must first lower the vehicle then add dexron(R) vi transmission fluid to reach the correct level by using both the cold fluid level measurement for initial addition while checking for Oil Pan gasket leaks.
