The first step to replacing the exhaust camshaft position actuator is to take off the camshaft cover and then the upper
Timing Chain Guide bolts and guide. After that, take out the
Timing Chain Tensioner and keep the camshaft secured with a 24 mm wrench while you only loosen the exhaust camshaft actuator bolt, without taking it off. Fit the Timing Chain Tensioner tool (J 44217) into the Timing Chain so the tips are all in, and use one tool from j 44217 on the exhaust camshaft to trap the Timing Chain, then tighten the nuts well. Do the same thing with the other j 44217 tool on the intake camshaft side. Carefully mark the intake and exhaust camshaft actuators and their locations on the Timing Chain so the camshafts can be installed properly. Unscrew and get rid of the exhaust camshaft actuator bolt , then take off the exhaust camshaft actuator from the camshaft and Timing Chain. When installing, make sure the intake camshaft actuator mark has not changed, then put the Timing Chain onto the exhaust actuator, aligning the marks, and tighten the new bolt until it is snug. Once all tools are off both sides, take a 24 mm wrench to hold the camshaft, then tighten the new camshaft actuator bolt to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.), plus an additional 30 degrees with the angle meter (J 45059). Carefully clean away the old oil from the Timing Chain Tensioner and look it over for damage, such as scoring or excessive movement. Double-check the length of the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly by measurement. The tensioner needs to be completely compressed, and its length should be 72 mm (2.83 inches) from one end to the other if it's new. You should then take out the
Piston assembly from the tensioner body, hold the tensioner tool (J 45027- Look at the inside of the tensioner body for any dirt or harm, clean as needed, and push the compressed Piston assembly inside without pushing it hard against the bottom. Be sure the tension is close to 72 mm (2.83 inches) when measured across the Piston. If this is not enough, repeat the earlier instructions. Make sure the Timing Chain Tensioner hole in the Cylinder Head is clean, put on the Timing Chain Tensioner, and tighten it to 75 nm (66 ft. Lbs.). Press the Timing Chain Tensioner 2 mm (0.079 inches) in with a suitable tool having a rubber tip, install the upper Timing Chain Guide and tighten its bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.), and then put on the camshaft cover.
