Cadillac XLR Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on Cadillac XLR?
    A:
The air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable replacement must start with disabling the sir system. Wheels must point straight ahead as the Steering Column needs to be in lock position to avoid damaging the sir coil assembly when disconnecting Steering Column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. The Steering Column stays secured through use of the Steering Column anti rotation pin (J 42640). To begin the procedure remove the Steering Wheel from its shaft before potentially extracting the tilt lever in its direct path. Remove 2 torx(R) head screws from the lower trim cover before taking away the lower trim cover itself. Two torx(R) head screws fastening the upper trim cover need removal before proceeding to remove the upper trim cover. Strap the wire harness away from the Steering Wheel column harness before you remove the retaining ring and the sir coil assembly from the Steering Shaft. Users should dispose of any old sir coil if they choose to replace it. When installing the new sir coil assembly position it in the center while the wheels face forward when the Steering Column is in the lock position. Knock the sir coil alignment into position against the turn signal cancel cam assembly horn tower before mounting it on the Steering Shaft assembly. Tighten the retaining ring into place in the groove. Place the upper trim cover onto the new sir coil but remove its centering tab before tightening the 2 torx(R) head screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Use 2 torx(R) head screws to install the lower trim cover which should create proper tab engagement before screw torque reaches 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Vehicle owners with a tilt column should line up and insert their tilt lever handle into the Steering Column to achieve a lock. To finish the installation process you must mount the Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft and activate the sir system.
