  Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads (J55) on Cadillac DTS?

  Check the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir before work. You need no fluid removal if the reservoir sits at its middle mark. Otherwise, bring fluid down to the midpoint level. Position the vehicle properly and note how the wheel relates with the axle flange before you take out the tire and wheel assembly during service. Set a large c-clamp on top of the brake caliper but behind both caliper and outside pads while tightening until the pistons push through the caliper. Pull both c-clamp and brake caliper pin bolts then secure the caliper bolt-upright with heavy mechanic's wire to shield the hydraulic flexible brake hose from harm. Push the caliper up off the hose but keep it connected afterward tighten a second large c-clamp onto the caliper pistons to push them inward. When removing the c-clamp from the Brake Pad setup also remove the old wood block. Next take out the brake pads from the caliper bracket mounting points for visual inspection of the pad retainers. Look for brake caliper bolt suspension boot damage then replace it if found. Also examine pin bolts for corrosion and replace them when needed along with inspecting and replacing the piston boot when necessary. Lower the caliper onto new brake pads along with Brake Pad retainers and apply silicone lube to front brake caliper pin bolts. Thread the bottom caliper pin bolt into place before tightening the pin bolts to 113 n.m (83 lb ft). After returning the wheel assembly, put the vehicle down again and smoothly push on the Brake Pedal to 2/3 its range with the engine switched off before releasing it. Continue this process until you feel a stable Brake Pedal so the caliper pistons and brake pads find their correct position. End with correct fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir and perform disc and pad polishing steps.
