2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2009 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, one of the first steps will involve the removal of the automatic transmission flexplate. Then, remove the old crankshaft rear oil seal (141). For installation make certain that the oil seal has a reverse-lip design facing away from the engine and the part number markings back towards the engine. Start by checking the seal for the correct orientation. Attach the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer (J 41479) cone and bolts to the rear of the crankshaft, torquing the bolts to snug but not over-tightened. Mount the rear oil seal on the tapered cone and slide it into the seal bore of the rear. Bend the J 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone until it reaches the oil seal and align it into the tool. Turn the handle of the tool clockwise in order to seat the seal to the bore in the rear cover. Finally, you pull out the J41479 and reinsert the automatic transmission flexplate.
