2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Shift Cable for the M86 Manual Transmission on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: A successful m86 manual transmission Shift Cable replacement requires the application of the parking brake together with shifting the transmission to neutral position (N). First remove the console before lifting the cable retainers while disconnecting each cable end from both the shift control assembly and transmission shift levers for noting their original positions. Start this task by taking out the Shift Cable from its position on the transmission cable bracket before lifting and supporting the vehicle body. After you remove the Shift Cable attachment nut under the vehicle body you can lower the car. Begin by taking away the left instrument panel closeout panel followed by pushing aside the driver-side front carpet. The grommet must be separated from the Floor Pan while the technician pulls the cable through the driver's floor opening to remove it from the vehicle. The cable assembly needs to be inserted through the driver's floor opening before installing the grommet at a 90-degree angle to the floor opening. Place back the driver's side front carpet and left instrument panel closeout panel before raising the vehicle. The Shift Cable attachment nut requires installation onto the underbody before tightening it to 10 nm (89 lb in). Put down the vehicle to add shift cables onto the transmission cable bracket. Measure and install shift cables with their ends attached to transmission shift levers and shift control assembly according to initial disassembly steps. To complete this step start by pushing the shifter neutral lock clip then adjust the shifter position while sliding the lock clip to center before checking to confirm transmission is in neutral position and finally pressing down on the locking tabs before recovering the shifter neutral lock clip to its starting position. Finally, install the console.
