2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Before beginning the shift control cable replacement you need to push the parking brake and set the transmission to 4th gear. Before cable end removal from the shift control assembly and toward reassembly the technician should make detailed notes about their locations. The Shift Cable ends must be detached from the transmission shift levers while recording the cable positions. The removal process of the Shift Cable can begin after both cable detachments from the transmission cable bracket. Support the vehicle while you elevate it to remove the Shift Cable attachment nut situated under the vehicle before letting the vehicle down. The installation process requires removal of the left instrument panel closeout panel followed by setting the driver's side front carpet to the side. The grommet must be separated from the Floor Pan while you pull the cable through the opening in the driver's floor area to extract it from the vehicle. The cable assembly installation requires passing it through the driver's floor opening before setting the grommet flush against the floor opening. After replacing the driver-side carpet with the left instrument panel closeout panel you should raise the vehicle to its proper position. Lower the vehicle after attachment of the Shift Cable underbody nut which requires tightening to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Create an assembly line by placing shift cables on the transmission cable bracket then join the Shift Cable ends with transmission shift levers according to disassembly records while joining the Shift Cable to the shift control assembly. To free the 4th gear locking tab users must pull the shifter ring upwards to let the tab unlock but should do so gently to prevent damage to plastic components. The installation requires pulling up on the shifter ring to expose the 4th gear locking tab after which locking pliers must be placed as depicted then rotated upward to compress the tabs. First engage the 4th gear locking tab of the shift control assembly housing followed by placing the transmission into 4th gear position before you press down on the cable retainers and reposition the shifter 4th gear lock clip to its original position. After that you can proceed with console installation.
